Objective shared web hosting provider ratings

a startup idea shared by Sasmito Adibowo on 06/27/2012

When your budget only affords to host your site in a shared web hosting company, choosing which one that's best is tricky. Their rates varies but it's difficult to gauge their sites reliability, performance, and uptime.

It would be great if there is a central location that can measure website's speed (as in average page load time per kilobyte) and uptime and correlate them with which webhost company that they're hosted on. That is, give out an average (with standard deviation) of the websites managed by a given shared web hosting company. Then correlate these numbers with the hosting packages & prices that they offer.

I like the idea presented, but why not include a few more services that we all know go to great pains to use smoke and mirrors to hide their actual rates and value for the cost? For example, mobile and land-line phone and IP phone services, Wordpress themes, virtual assistant services... What else?

That may be good, but including too much "scope" pretty soon it'll be just another Q & A site, like Quora. One of the unique feature about webhosting is that its uptime and speed can be objectively measured. Typically a server will have a few websites hosted on it and we can take the average response times and speed of those sites and come to some average value irrespective of the CMS technology used. Gather a few hosts together and partition them by the hosting company / site and we have one side of the equation automatically covered.

Perhaps the same legal entity can also provide premium site monitoring services or website optimization consultancy services (like optimizing wordpress or SEO, for example).

what i like about this idea is that its right on trend in terms og google putting so much emphasis on website speed as a major factor in organic search results. webmasters the world over will be looking to this metric more and more as a deciding factor when choosing a host. focusing on this is a must.
