International mobile payment service

a startup idea shared by Susan on 01/13/2011

How about a service like PayPal but via mobile phones so you can pay by sending sms from any country in the world. Lot of people don't have PayPal account or credit cards activated for internet payments or they are concerned about safety of the transactions. Sending sms is simple and safe. The provisions need to be reasonable though so the shops can afford it.

The Problem (2)
8 months ago by Matt Norad
There's a reason why many payment system unable to be more "international". Mainly due to cost, law and unsustainable market. The closest to being worldwide payment system is Paypal but they still have a problem with cost.

For me, the most promising payment system right now is Stripe(stripe.com). The pricing and usage is secure and simple. They currently accept worldwide payment but recipient limited to US & Canada. Stripe is backed by the original Paypal founder.

Whoaaa !!! Are your working for Stripe?

You raise the point about the cost, but Stripe is simply unafordable!!!

2.9% + 0.30 cents per transaction is out of range for at least half of the world.

Moreover, Stripe is only an internet payment platform. So, you can use it only with an internet access...

In terms of security, Stripe is not more secure than any other solution (Paypal, Moneybrookers...), but only as secure as the others.

The key advantages of Stripe is its simplicity to integrate inside an application (web, mobile...).

Last, but not least, there is no chance for Stripe to compete in Europe, except if (as Paypal years ago) it obtains a banking licence...

There is a similar system working in Africa: http://www.mpayafrica.com/details.html. I didn't find a way how to use it in Europe or US in your e-shop.

there is a number of services like this, such as https://www.obopay.com

Neither of them is international. I am looking for a service I could use on eshop to allow customers from all over the world to pay by their mobile phones. I don't think it exists at the moment. I really tried to Google it.

ok, i see rather big potential in this. let's see your thoughts on a few things:

(1) what makes you believe that people will be less afraid about safety when using cell phones? i think it is a mindset thing - you either pay the oldschool way (cash) or it is risky. not much in between

(2) there have to be some authentification + safety check before sending each sms (you cannot "just send an sms", THAT would be really risky). this assumes advanced cell phone and ability to use it - which makes your focus group mainly young people, who are not afraid to use internet banking imho.

(3) how would you charge the end customer? you either transfer the risk of non-payment to the mobile operator (so you would have to pay for him bearing the risk) or the end customer has to prepay. (such as here: http://bit.ly/hyjcs8) how would that work on the international level? only option i see at the moment is to do it online, which ruins the concept.

Here is interesting video about Google Payment system. It is not mobile, but as it is connected to Google accounts it might be very accessible: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=qiz_2c_QpOQ
